Yesterday I went shopping and I’m not afraid to admit I was also looking for Christmas wrapping paper! The mere thought of having to buy, wrap and deliver all those Christmas presents worries me every year and with the seasonal arrival of Second Baby I am on a mission to be ready earlier than ever. I also have a couple of birthday presents to arrange so it feels very good to be able to say I have a lot of my presents sorted.
I love handmade so I’ve really enjoyed making a lot of presents and I’ll be showing off my work over the next few weeks. As Edward is more aware of receiving presents I want to get him something really special. I’ve mentioned before how we try to buy wooden toys as we are firm believers that they are a good choice for young children as they are hypoallergenic, easy to keep clean, not full of nasty chemicals, durable and often come from sustainable sources too.
Fortunately I’ve squirreled away a wooden train set for him which I know he’s going to have lots of fun with (daddy too!). It’s a lovely nostalgic toy with simple parts which is educational and fun. I think it will fire up his imagination and can’t wait to see him taking up the whole of the lounge floor playing with it.
Of course wooden toys aren’t just for boys, it’s just that I think they do a good job of standing up to their rigorous play. Fingers crossed Second Baby will get as much enjoyment from our stash of wooden toys as Edward does.

August 30, 2011 at 6:11 pmI’ve also got a seasonal baby (well, January, but that’s close enough) so need to plan in advance for Christmas and birthdays too. I’m also opting for wooden toys – I’ve got a really cool wooden sit on dumper truck, so hopefully he’ll enjoy that. The train set sounds brilliant…maybe I’ll aim for that the year after!
