Which Photos Work Best for Wedding Invitations and Save the Dates?

Posted on October 18, 2024 by jenny

Wedding invitations and save-the-date cards always come in an envelope which has to make the guests fall in love with the event. This is why selecting the right photos for these cards will be of utmost importance especially if you want your guests to get the feel of the big day and what is expected. Whether it is basic invite wedding save-the-dates or wedding invitations, the images you choose should represent a deeper meaning of the relation you have with your spouse and the theme of the event in question. Here is a summary of what categories of pictures are most suitable and what you should consider when making the decision.

The importance of the right photo

The photograph in a wedding invitation is not simply a decoration but also encapsulates the individuals’ background, their type of celebration, and their personalities. In most instances, the picture is dominant in any wedding invitation as it is likely the first thing the guests see about your wedding. For this reason, it has to be an expression of your love, aligning well with the pictures and words that you want to depict. Therefore, a well-chosen image creates the excitement and the anticipation for your guests.

Types of photos that will work the best

When deciding on the best photo for your wedding save the date or invitations, it is important to consider several factors such as the mood you want to set and the style you want for your invites. Here are some of the photos that can work perfectly fine with your invites:

Engagement Photo

Engagement photos remains the most popular options for save-the-dates for all the right reasons. They mainly showcase the couple together in a romantic and candid setting. If you are a couple that wants to highlight your love story in the invites and save the dates, and equally share the moment of your journey, then this is the best option.

Candid Moments

It’s not mandatory that you have to share engagement photos showing your engagement moment, you can go for candid moment photos because they create an authentic vibe. These photos are about your spontaneous moments of laughter, joy and togetherness. They are a great option for couples that wants the basic invite wedding invitations to feel less staged and personal.

Themed or destination photos

For couples with a special theme for their wedding, destination photos reflect the setting and adds a cohesion touch to the invitations. If you are going for a beach wedding for example, adding a photo of you and your spouse on the shore can create a seamless transition between the event and the cards.

Classic portraits

Here is another timeless choice focusing on showing the connection between the couple and the unwavering love in a more posed manner. Classic portraits work well with formal wedding themes and traditional wedding invitations.

Seasonal photos

Are you planning your wedding during the summer, spring or winter? Depending on the season, you can match your wedding photos to the season to help create the appropriate atmosphere. For people going with the winter wedding you can add a photo in cozy winter wear. Alternatively, you can create a photo in a snowy setting to create that seasonal vibe.

Top Tips for selecting the perfect photo for your wedding invitations

There are various factors to consider when picking a photograph such as the quality, the photograph’s relations to overall design and the message that has to be conveyed. Here’s what to keep in mind:

Image Quality

First of all, make sure that the picture is of a good clarity. Otherwise, the photographs will portray the invitations sloppily. Images should have a good resolution that will be clear both on the screen and on paper. If you cannot do this yourself, you should get a good professional photographer to do the work.

Orientation and Cropping

More than 90% of wedding invites/save the date invite cards are either of the portrait orientation or landscape format. It is advisable to choose a photo that has the correct orientation to that of the card format. Furthermore, check that the image is capable of being trimmed without losing critical elements. Do not choose images wherein either of you are positioned such that your face is at the edge of the image, as trimming may obliterate important features.

Emphasis on light and colour

The most attractive pictures are those taken during the day. They look pleasant and friendly. The best images are those taken during the golden hour, just before dusk sets in, as they have a lovely soft glow to them.

The wedding theme

Before adding the photo, you need to make sure it matches your wedding’s overall style. Depending on whether you pick a countryside theme, outdoor or rustic theme, make sure the theme is clear.

Using a Photo in your wedding invitation design

It is also important to highlight different ways through which you can add the photo in your design. Here are some designs and examples to help you along the way.

Full Photo Cards

In this design, a full photo is featured as the background, with text overlaying the photo. The decision will depend on the details in the photo that the couple wants to display.

Photo collage designs

If you have a couple of photos that you don’t want to miss out, you can add them as a photo collage. This allows you to showcase several sides of the relationship including romantic, candid and playful shots.

Photo Frame designs

In some instances, couples incorporate a frame around the photo to allow space for imagery and elegant typography.

Spotlight photos

In case there’s a design that includes a smaller photo, you can go with the one that focuses on the particular moment and face. This adds a touch of elegance and at the same time keeps the photo subtle.

Conclusion

Always remember that the best wedding invitations are the ones that reflect your unique story and sets the right atmosphere for your event. Make sure to choose a perfect photo whether for candid moment, destination theme or formal portrait.
