What to pack in a maternity hospital bag?

Posted on October 19, 2011 by jenny

I can tell this pregnancy is going well because I just don’t have time to worry about it. I can’t even remember how many weeks pregnant I am which is worrying. Thank goodness I signed up to lots of marketing email so I get weekly reminders! When I bump into mum friends at our weekly events I either get “I didn’t realise you were pregnant” or “You look ready to pop” – not so great when I have a good couple of weeks to go!

I actually have my second midwife appointment this week – yes, my second midwife appointment when my baby is due next month! I try not to worry about the state of the NHS, midwifery care, the dirty delivery room I remember from last time, the abrupt midwives or unedible food. I know I have a lot to be thankful for but I can’t believe I’ve had only 3 appointments in 30-odd weeks of pregnancy.

This week I bought a lovely Stokke newborn seat from eBay, newborn nappies and formula and am thinking about what to pack in my hospital bag. Last time I had two bags – one for me and one for the baby. I didn’t use 9/10 of the things I packed. Even better, we left the baby bag in the car so my husband had to go back and collect a nappy and babygro whilst they were prepping me for theatre!

I still have to sort childcare for Edward but I’ve been recommended a couple of agencies from a nanny friend and he starts nursery in a couple of weeks so I’m hoping he’ll be settled before the upheaval of the Second Baby.

Right, off to google helpful blog posts on what to pack in my hospital bag. Feel free to leave me any suggestions.

Wow not long to go- good luck for labour! You dont really need that much- a few babygros, nappies, wipes (though my NHS hospital gave us cotton wool and water and said it was better for newborns) but most importantly stuff for yourself! Comfy and pretty dressing gown, fluffy towel, slippers and if it was grubby last time how about some multipurpose antibacterial wipes… and don’t forget your toothbrush! Good luck (popped over from BlogHorn)

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Antibacterial wipes is a great idea – and will be purchased!

2 midwife appointments in 30 weeks!? That’s shocking! The NHS is awful. I’m due in 5 weeks with my first and am panicking about what to pack. No doubt I’ll forget one of the most important things! Hope you manage to find some helpful articles 🙂

Hi! I hope you haven’t had the baby yet! I was typing a few thoughts in the comments box when I read this and it turned into a reminiscence of happy times and then a whole blog post appeared – so I spared you and your readers and would invite you to visit instead if you are interested in what I packed in my own bag nearly three years ago now. Good luck and keep us all posted.
