Wax melts workshop @ Wick and Ceramic

A few weeks ago my daughter and I took part in a fun workshop at our local ceramic cafe making mini jelly cat inspired clay models. We had such a great time we decided to go again, this time booking a wax melts workshop. We’ve made our own wax melts at home using a craft kit but were excited to make more.

First of all we painted our own wax burners. There were so many colours to choose from, along with a handy guide to what the colours would look like once glazed and fired.

We had tried to plan how we wanted to decorate them. I opted for a colourful pattern, Little Sis went for tiny daisies and strawberries.

We gave everything two coats of paint, it was hard trying to remember which bits we had painted! Then we left our decorated wax burners to go and make our own wax melts.

My teen loves her electronic wax burner so has made wax melts before, but this was my first time. I’ve made my own candles before but I liked the idea of making wax melts. Wax melts are designed to be used on a wax burner, and are little blocks of fragranced wax, just like a candle but without the wick.

We sat in front of trays with all the supplies laid out – clamshell moulds in the shapes of hearts, glass measuring jars, a whisk and even scales.

We worked our way through the bottles of fragrance, choosing our favourites. Then added drops of fragrance into hot wax before pouring it into the clamshell mould.

They were quite quick to make and we added dried flowers to the top of each one.

You could see the wax cooling straight away but we left our wax burners to be glazed and fired, along with the wax melts to set, before collecting them a week later. this was such a fun activity to do with a teen. My daughter loves a crafty activity and this was a lovely way to spend time together. I can’t wait to see what we make next!
