On Saturday we were fortunate to be invited to see ‘TUTANKHAMUN: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh at the Saatchi Gallery. It had been a while since our last visit to the Saatchi Gallery and we really wanted to go and see this exhibition so jumped at the chance! It was an early start but we jumped on the underground and were soon at Sloane Square for a quick walk to the Saatchi Gallery.

Tutankhamum: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh

The touring exhibition opened last month (it’s already been to Los Angeles and Paris) and is open until Sunday 3rd May 2020. The exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb by Howard Carter, and is the final chance to see these artefacts before they return to Egypt forever.

The exhibition is organised over 10 rooms (two of which are places to shop): Intro Theatre, Preparation, Danger, Danger, Guardian, Rebirth, Second Death, Discovery, Discovery, He Lives. The rooms felt large and spacious but I imagine they could feel very busy when the gallery was full of visitors. There were more than 150 authentic pieces from the tomb – three times the quantity that has travelled in previous exhibitions – more than 60 of which are travelling outside of Egypt for the first time.

Everything was beautifully displayed and we had audio guides so we could find out more. The children were also given age appropriate activity trails which kept them busy as we walked around. They loved the exhibition. My 9 year old has studied the Egyptians at school and my 8 year old will be learning about them next term so this was an amazing opportunity for them to see so many objects up close.

The activity trails kept them occupied. They loved learning about the water boy who discovered the tomb and they had so many favourite objects they wanted to show us, especially the gold toes!

How to get your hands on reduced price tickets with the Family Holiday Pass

The exhibition is obviously very popular and it is highly recommended that you book before you go. The good news is that families can save money on ticket prices by purchasing the Family Holiday Pass. This costs just £70 + booking fees when paid for in advance online OR £80.50 from the Box Office. It includes entry for 2 Adults and 2 Children OR 1 Adult and 3 Children. The pass is valid only for the 9am time slot on weekdays from Monday 16th until Tuesday 31st Dec. Children must be aged 16 and under and those aged 3 and under go free.
