In the depths of winter it can be hard to remember that everything is seasonal and although Summer is behind us, it’s not long until the shortest day (check out our winter solstice lamp craft) and we can look forward to Spring. I love living in the UK where life is totally shaped by the seasons.
As a parent I get to enjoy the long days of summer with my children. Life is easier in the summer. You can wear minimal clothes, spend all day outside and eat ice cream and salad all day. The winter months are harder. It’s dark by the time we get home from school. It takes ages to get out of the door thanks to putting on hats, coats and scarves and I seem to spend a lot longer in the kitchen preparing meals to fill everyone up. According to research by E.ON 59% of people wish it was summer all year round!
I don’t think I’m one of those people as I think I prefer the colder months. I also think it’s possible to get a shot of summer in the colder months, and try to bring back some of those happy summer vibes.
Top tips for holding onto happy summer vibes in the winter months
Print out photos of your happy summer memories and display them where you see them every day
Create a summer memories box – filled with ticket stubs, postcards and souvenirs from your holidays
Winter-proof your home by insulating your home (and save money in lost heat), track your energy useage, install a smart thermostat, replace an inefficient boiler and check you’re on the right tariff. There are so many ways to make your home cosy and efficient and you can find lots of tips on the E.ON blog.
Clear out your summer wardrobe and donate to a charity shop. My children are constantly growing and I know half the things I bought them last summer won’t fit in 6 months time.
Plan next years’ holiday. This is my favourite thing to do. We’re thinking a EuroCamp holiday would be fun.
Winter-fy your favourite summer recipes. Yes, I totally made up that word! Why not re-create your favourite summer treat for winter. Add ice-cream to a homemade winter fruit pie or grill sausages and burgers for an indoor barbecue.
Instead of the warm summer sun string up wintery fairy lights to make your living space cosy.
Add a splash of colour with a bright red throw and cushions so you can stay in, snuggle up and watch a winter film.
