A West End treat – The Gruffalo’s Child live

Posted on November 25, 2017June 26, 2022 by jenny

This morning we went into London’s West End for a special Christmas treat. We went to watch acclaimed theatre company Tall Stories perform a musical adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s awarding-winning picture book The Gruffalo’s Child.

We love anything by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler but we have a special place in our hearts for The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child. Last year we were lucky enough to watch Tall Stories perform The Gruffalo so we were super excited to see her follow in her father’s giant footsteps with a Christmas season in the West End!

It’s a big step – just how brave is she? Find out for yourselves by joining her at the Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue from Wednesday 22 November 2017 to Sunday 7 January 2018. This festive season will showcase the production’s new set and costumes, and is the first time The Gruffalo’s Child will play at the Lyric.

One wild and windy night the Gruffalo’s Child ignores her father’s warning and tiptoes out into the snow. After all, the Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist… does he?

Tall Stories’ magical, musical adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s award-winning sequel to The Gruffalo (published by Macmillan Children’s Books) is wonderful. We re-read the story a few nights ago in preparation for our visit but we didn’t need to. Tall Stories’ adaptation is fast and fun and just magical. Three actors play all the parts and the costumes were wonderful, bring Mouse, Fox, Owl, Snake, The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child to life before our very eyes.

Snake was probably my favourite character

The show run to 55 minutes which was perfect, but children are kept on their toes with lots of songs, laughs and places to join in the action. The time whizzed by and we loved every second.

I can’t think of a nicer way to spend a morning in London. We followed the show with a trip to Leicester Square so the children could visit The Lego Store and a look at the pretty Christmas lights.

Tall Stories’ The Gruffalo’s Child  is the hit musical adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s awarding-winning picture book at the Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue (just 5 minutes from Piccadilly Circus). Visit gruffaloschildlive.com to watch the trailer. The live action show runs from Wednesday 22nd November 2017 until Sunday 7th January 2018.

Those costumes are fabulous. The Gruffalo was one of my sons favourite books when he was little. This production looks fabulous

This sounds like a great show to visit in the run up to Christmas with the little ones. They do love The Gruffalo and it would make a great treat for them.
