As they are typically located high up in the mountains, you’ll have to do quite a bit of hiking to reach your destination. The most famous is the Tiger’s Nest, which started as a meditation cave in the 9th century. The visit will likely be the highlight of your journey to Bhutan. Depending on the weather, you might find the monastery surrounded by clouds, creating a distinctive image that will remain etched in your child’s memory forever.

Malta

The Popeye Village, a film set built in the late 70s, has since been transformed into a fun park. The rustic buildings are located straight by the beach and flanked by a lofty cliff. This entertainment park also includes boat rides, swimming areas, and several restaurants. 

South Africa

Costa Rica 

When it comes to places that offer family-friendly activities, few can rival Costa Rica. From zip-lining to exploring national parks, making the trip a fun learning experience is easy. The Arenal Volcano National Park is part of the larger Arenal Huetar Norte Conservation Area and is a popular area for birdwatching, given the nearly 1,000 species. Some of the other animals in the Arenal Volcano are capuchin monkeys, jaguars, coatis and deer. Many of the species are endangered, such as the resplendent quetzal. 

The Poás Volcano National Park is also the home of many species of birds and animals, including flycatchers, rabbits and coyotes, as well as toucans and clay-coloured robins. Make sure to pack the right type of clothing with you. Costa Rica is generally very warm, so get lightweight fabrics and garments in which you’ll feel comfortable. Practical shoes are also a must, as you’ll walk around a lot during your journey. 

Iceland 

Iceland is one of the safest countries in the world, making it an ideal place for travelling families. The country’s natural beauty is second to none, as you’ll see numerous waterfalls, glaciers and active volcanoes. Iceland is highly reminiscent of a fantasy setting, so it’s impossible not to find at least a few spots your children will find absolutely mind-boggling. 

The Eyjafjallajökull, which last erupted in 2010, is covered by an ice cap that covers more than eighty square kilometres, feeding outlet glaciers. Not far from the Krafla volcano is the shallow lake of Mývatn, the natural habitat of many waterbirds. You can take your children on a glacier hike if they are older. Despite how it might sound, it’s not dangerous and relatively non-strenuous too. And, of course, you can join an electric boat tour during which you’ll have the opportunity to watch whales, glaciers, and harbour towns such as Húsavík.
