Now in its sixth year, Star Wars Reads, a celebration of Star Wars and reading, has returned with a month-long campaign throughout April. Last year I wrote a post about my son. The only books he would read were Star Wars related, with a few Angry Birds and Minecraft books thrown into the mix.
I really thought a year later I would not be writing this post but guess what? He’s still the same. Slightly bigger perhaps but still only reading Star Wars books on his own. Together we have managed to read a few Roald Dahl books, we’ve just finished reading Matilda. And I recently bought the first Harry Potter book to read together too.
The one thing I can’t complain about is that my son does read. I’ve lost count of the number of Star Wars books I’ve bought for him over the last 12 months. He’s now 7 so capable of reading chapter books. I know he’s re-read the Jedi Academy books which he loves – he’d love to read more in the series too if anyone decides to write another!
He received some lovely Star Wars books for Christmas and his birthday. These have been supplemented with a few more during the year, often as a reward for a good school report or a new badge at Beavers.
My son is 7 in Year 2 and has now finished the Oxford Reading Tree books and is on ‘free readers’ as they call them at his school. I wish he was allowed to choose books from home because he never wants to read the books he brings home! Thankfully he loves his Star Wars books, especially the Star Wars titles from DK. They come in different levels for all stages of readers and he doesn’t seem to mind this, just enjoys the content. I always ask him if there are any tricky words but he’s adamant he knows everything! I’ve bought quite a few of this range recently, including the Adventures of BB-8 and Jedi Battles.
We love to craft so I also bought him Star Wars Make & Do which I was a little disappointed with. A lot of it is taken up with a blank drawing pad! There is also a 48 page Activity Book with some fun crafts and a section on how to draw your favourite characters.
I also just discovered the Star Wars Rebels: Servants of the Empire series by Jason Fry. I bought the first book Edge of the Galaxy for my 7 year old but he wants to read it together. I’m hoping he’ll enjoy it so much that he’ll read a few sneaky chapters after lights out I remember being bitten by the reading bug and getting my torch out to read under the covers because I enjoyed a book so much. I’m hoping he’ll enjoy this as there seem to be a number of books in the series.
I can’t complain too much as both my children love to read, I’m hoping he’ll fall in love with Harry Potter but if not, I know he has his Star Wars library to keep him company.

June 1, 2017 at 8:45 am[…] This is a great family film and we all really enjoyed it. My 7 year old son loved the bits relating to mud, poo or wee. He’s very aware of social media and liked the references to phones, video gaming and YouTube. The children both received copies of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul and I’m really hoping this will break the spell of Star Wars. […]

March 8, 2018 at 11:02 pm[…] My lovely little boy is going to be 8 next week. 8! I can’t quite believe that my lovely little baby is growing up so quickly. Thankfully he still loves to craft just as much as I do and we have plenty of laughs together. He recently discovered The Diary of a Wimpy Kid books which have been great for him. You may remember he was a bit of reluctant reader until he discovered Star Wars books. […]
