Our 2017 Gingerbread House {Witch’s Cottage}

We love gingerbread houses – but you know that, right?

Over the last few weeks I bought a few gingerbread house kits which I couldn’t wait to make with the family. But then I came across the BKD Mini Bakers Club and found out that the December theme was a gingerbread house – so of course I went and subscribed. I actually found a 50% off code which made the price of the box very reasonable. A few days later there was a knock on the door and the Postman handed me our box.

I’ve tried a few products from BKD but never one of their subscription boxes for kids. I was looking forward to seeing what was inside. It’s a big box and inside was everything we needed to make a gingerbread house, and a bird feeder, as well as a little booklet and a recipe for Gingerbread Biscuits (so you could re-create the gingerbread biscuit mix included in the box. Everything looked very appealing and my 7 year old couldn’t wait to get started.

This year we’ve taken a step back from Christmas. Instead of trying to squeeze in everything and feel exhausted, w’re keeping weekend free to relax at home. So today was spent baking at home. We made the gingerbread house, as well as pinata cookies and a Christmas tree-shaped cake!

Included in the kit were the gingerbread mix, a gingerbread house template, piping bag, sweets and the icing mix. The instructions were easy to follow and my son and husband mixed up the gingerbread, cut out the shapes and baked them. They used the leftover dough to make Christmas trees. The witches house had a nice, simple design which meant it came together easily. After it had cooled they put the walls together, iced and decorated it.

They enjoyed making it together and we all can’t wait to eat it! I’m not sure how long it will survive, but for now it is filling the house with delicious Christmas smells.
