I started writing this post over 2 months ago but Christmas obviously got in the way. I made sure to spend some time on my Shipping Forecast quilt recently, so wanted to post a little update about it.
My Shipping Forecast quilt update
About 6 months ago I finished my Shipping Forecast quilt top. I can’t believe I never made time to blog about this! You may remember I added the Shipping Forecast areas using my Cricut machine and some pretty gold coloured iron on vinyl. After the names were pressed in place I was able to add all the felt wool letters, the boats, seagulls and other creatures. I made sure these were well spread out over the quilt top before stitching them in place.
Then it was time to turn my attention to the quilt back, which had been sadly neglected. For some reason I had got bored when cutting out my fabric squares so the first thing I did was cut more squares from my fabric stash. I stitched them into 8 rows of 7 squares using my sewing machine, making sure the quilt back was slightly larger than the front.
Although this was to be the back of the quilt I still wanted it to be interesting. I tried to stick with my nautical theme, using blue and white fabrics including some of my favourite Liberty fabrics. The backing was still looking a bit flat and dull so I added some hexagon fabric scraps to give it some texture.
I tried to use co-ordinating fabrics and just need to hand stitch these in place before the quilt back is finished.
Whilst I was in Frome over the Christmas holidays I picked up the wadding for my quilt. I decided to use the backing fabric to bind my quilt so I’m hoping I can put the layers together soon and hand quilt it.
