It seems weeks ago that we spent two days in Luxembourg City with our teens. We like to think we know our teens pretty well. They love a short city break, so we spent time before our trip planning places we knew they would enjoy. Luxembourg is a small country, it’s actually Europe’s seventh smallest country. It’s capital city, confusingly called Luxembourg City, is famous for its medieval stone walls built on sheer cliffs.

Luxembourg City with teens: our top tips

Luxembourg is a small city, easy to get around and see everything if you have a couple of days. The size also means you can quickly get your bearings and figure out the different parts of the city. Public transport is free within Luxembourg, meaning the trams are free and handily run through the city. You can travel on the funicular rail and panoramic elevator too – handy for getting around the multiple levels in the city.

I feel that Luxembourg can be ignored by travellers, but that’s a bonus if you are looking for somewhere not overrun by tourists. Here are our top tips for places to visit with teens in Luxembourg:

The panoramic elevator connects the “Pescatore” park located in the city centre to the Pfaffenthal area at the bottom of the Alzette valley. This ultra-modern, panoramic elevator travels a distance of 60 m in just 30 seconds.

The Bock Casements are a subterranean defence system made up of kilometres of tunnels, and one of the most important visitor sites in Luxembourg. The first underground tunnels were built in 1644, in the era of the Spanish domination and were used up until and during the Second World War.

The Chocolate House Nathalie Bonn, is situated in front of the Grand Ducal Palace. Full from a delicious lunch, we bought some of the famous Hotchocspoon to enjoy back at our Airbnb.

La Chemin de la Cornicheruns along the Alzette valley on the ramparts – built by the Spaniards and the French in the 17th century. Known as “Europe’s most beautiful balcony,” this elevated path offers sweeping panoramas of the Alzette River valley.

Take a free tram ride, as public transport is free within Luxembourg City

We loved our two days in Luxembourg City. The weather was super hot on our first day, and raining the next. We found plenty to see and do and walked a lot! We even found a lovely little toy shop selling Jellycats which the youngest teen demanded we visit.
