How to Make Family Holidays Extra Special

Posted on November 27, 2024March 20, 2025 by jenny

Holidays are the perfect time to create lasting memories with the people you love most. Whether it’s Christmas, Easter, or a special family event, these moments help bring everyone together. But sometimes, the festive season can feel rushed or stressful. To make your family holidays truly special, it’s important to plan ahead and find ways to enjoy each other’s company. From fun family games to creating homemade decorations, and even raising a glass of the prestigious champagne Pol Roger for the adults to celebrate the season, here are simple tips to make your holidays unforgettable.

1. Start with a Family Tradition

One of the best ways to make holidays extra special is by creating family traditions. These rituals give everyone something to look forward to and help create a sense of excitement.

Holiday Baking: A great tradition is baking together. Whether it’s making gingerbread cookies at Christmas or chocolate eggs at Easter, getting the whole family involved in the kitchen can be a fun way to bond.

Decorating the House: Make decorating the house a special event. Everyone can help hang lights, put up the tree, or craft homemade ornaments. It becomes something to look forward to each year.

Holiday Countdown: Create an advent calendar or a countdown chart. Each day leading up to the holiday, there can be something small to do together—like a quick game, a little treat, or a note with a family activity.

2. Set the Scene with DIY Decorations

Decorating your home with festive flair is a simple way to get into the holiday spirit. But rather than just buying store-bought decorations, make some of your own as a family. DIY decorations are often more meaningful and fun to make.

Create Homemade Ornaments: Gather some simple craft supplies like glitter, glue, and coloured paper, and spend time together creating ornaments for the tree. You can also make wreaths or garlands from pinecones or even paper chains.

Handmade Table Centrepieces: For the holiday dinner, make centrepieces with natural elements like holly, mistletoe, or even candles and pine branches. It’s a lovely way to decorate your table and makes the meal feel even more special.

Family Crafting Day: Set aside a day for a family crafting session. Make handprint art, paint picture frames, or even create personalised stockings. The idea is to make decorations together, giving them extra meaning when you see them throughout the holiday season.

3. Play Family Games Together

Family holidays are the perfect time for everyone to come together and enjoy games. Whether you’ve got little ones or teenagers in the family, games are a great way to connect, have fun, and laugh.

Board Games: Choose games that everyone can enjoy. Classics like Monopoly, Scrabble, Carcassonne, or Cluedo are always crowd-pleasers. These games are not only fun but also encourage teamwork and friendly competition.

Charades or Pictionary: These games are a hit at any family gathering. They get everyone involved, regardless of age. Plus, they often result in hilarious moments that will become part of the family’s holiday story.

Outdoor Activities: If the weather permits, spend time outside playing games like hide-and- seek, frisbee, or even a friendly football match. It’s a great way for everyone to burn off energy and enjoy each other’s company.

4. Plan a Special Family Meal

Food is an important part of holiday celebrations, and it’s even better when everyone pitches in. A family holiday meal is the perfect time to create something memorable.

Cook Together: Get the whole family involved in cooking or baking the meal. Assign different tasks based on age or interest—kids can help with decorating cookies, while adults prepare the main course and bring VB 30 pack cans. When everyone contributes, it makes the meal feel more personal.

Try Something New: While traditional holiday foods are always a hit, consider trying something new as a family. Pick a new recipe to try out together, whether it’s a special cake, a new vegetable dish, or a twist on the holiday classic.

Set a Beautiful Table: The setting of the table can set the tone for the meal. Use special plates, napkins, or candles to create a cosy, inviting atmosphere. Don’t forget to add a little sparkle, such as some glittery tablecloths or festive candles.

5. Create a Family Holiday Playlist

Music is a great way to make the holiday atmosphere feel extra special. Create a family holiday playlist with everyone’s favourite songs, from classic carols to modern festive hits.

Involve the Kids: Let the children choose some of their favourite songs for the playlist. Whether it’s a popular pop tune or a festive classic, having a mix of music from everyone in the family will make everyone feel included.

Sing Along Together: Put on the playlist while you’re decorating or baking, and encourage everyone to sing along. You might even want to have a mini holiday karaoke session, especially for older kids and adults.

6. Raise a Glass to the Season

Finally, one of the most enjoyable ways to celebrate a family holiday is by taking a moment to relax and toast the season. While kids can enjoy a festive drink like hot chocolate, cider, or fruit punch, adults can indulge in a glass of champagne. There’s something about raising a glass that makes the holiday feel more official.

Toast to Family: Take a moment to appreciate the family time you’re spending together. Whether it’s before the holiday meal or after a game, a toast is a great way to acknowledge how special the time together is.

Celebrate Milestones: If there’s a special milestone or achievement in your family—whether it’s a new home, a new addition to the family, or even an anniversary—don’t forget to raise a glass to that too. Celebrating milestones with family makes the holiday season even more meaningful.

7. Capture the Moment with Family Photos

A great way to make holidays extra special is to capture the memories with family photos. Set aside time during the day to take family portraits or candid shots of everyone enjoying the celebrations.

Create a Photo Album: After the holidays, put together a photo album that reflects all the special moments you shared. This can be a fun family project and a lovely keepsake for years to come.

DIY Photo Booth: Create a simple DIY photo booth with props like Santa hats, scarves, and funny glasses. It’s a fun way for everyone to get involved and make memories together.

Making family holidays extra special doesn’t require grand gestures or elaborate plans. Simple things like spending time together, creating new traditions, and enjoying family games can help make the season unforgettable. By focusing on what matters most—being together—you’ll create a holiday experience everyone will cherish for years to come.
