This dreary wet weather has me dreaming of our summer holiday. Last summer we found our dream cottage in a sleepy English seaside town, literally on the beach. We had an amazing time so knew we wanted to go back again this year. The only downside is the fact it’s far away so it’ll be a long drive to get there.
If the beach isn’t enough for the toddler there are National Trust properties ranging from country houses to castles, if the weather turns grandad has a lovely indoor swimming pool and there are a plethora of charity shops (for me!). It should be a fun week once we’re there.
I find the journey the hardest bit. Whilst my husband concentrates on driving I’m constantly turning around to deal with the toddler. Travelling with children doesn’t have to be hard work though. We often drive long distances to visit the relatives and with a bit of planning I’m sure it can go smoothly!
My top tips for travelling with a toddler:
iPad – this is a quick fix as it’s always pre-loaded with episodes of Thomas the Tank Engine which the toddler loves. At the grand old age of 25 months he’s learned how to use it though, switching between YouTube and his favourite apps. We try to limit his time on the iPad but it is useful if he’s getting restless.
snacks – this goes without saying but despite comfort breaks at delightful service stations I pack healthy snacks to keep him going.
a bag of colouring pencils and colouring book – this may not sound sensible but it is! I put a couple of pencils in a clear plastic bag as well as a new colouring book to keep him amused. Plus, once we’re on holiday it’s useful when we’re having a meal out and the food is taking a while to arrive.
selection of favourite trains – my little Thomas addict can’t go anywhere, even the corner shop, without his wooden Thomas and Gordon. These were his first ever Thomas toys and he adores them. They always get packed last, asked about first and played with first. These days I pack some extra trains and his small Thomas Trackmaster set too. Obviously we don’t set up the train set in the car but it’s always good to have some familiar toys whilst we’re away.
I’ve also started to look for pictures to colour, dot to dots and simple games which can be downloaded in advance for our long trips.
I don’t think I will be worrying so much about Little Sis this holiday as we will be able to take our breaks around her milk feeds and she is a really good traveller. She also seems to love the fact she has her own in-car entertainment, otherwise known as the toddler!
