Family cruise fashion: Outfits for everyone (without overpacking)

Posted on June 1, 2024March 7, 2026 by jenny

A cruise vacation is a fun way to travel and relax with the family without having to worry about the planning of what to do, see or eat on the ship as the cruise company takes care of it all. That said, what you wear on the ship requires careful thinking as the mix of activities and upscale dinner parties necessitates a mix of clothing styles to ensure bringing the right clothing without overpacking.

Therefore, when it comes to what outfit to wear on a family cruise vacation, it is important to know the events you will be attending as well as the weather conditions you are likely to encounter.

Family cruise fashion: Outfits for everyone (without overpacking)

After booking that amazing cruise deal, do check with your cruise line if you do not have any formal wear, as some lines may bend the rules, while some may refuse service altogether.

Having said all that, here are seven essential items each member of the family should pack for a memorable cruise vacation:

Swimwear A swimsuit is an absolute must item to carry on a cruise vacation, especially because you may be spending a lot of time on the ship’s pool or on the beach.

Women, particularly should bring a variety of options like a tankini or a one piece bikini to have a number of choices.

Cover-ups This is a versatile piece of attire which can be worn over the swimsuit as a dress for women or a top with shorts for the adults and the children.

It is important you choose a light fabric for a cover-up that is not only comfortable but keeps away the heat as well.

Casuals Packing comfortable casuals like cargo pants, shorts, sandals and t-shirts for the activities on the ship during daytime.

Check out all the venues on the ship where you will be going and consider a suitable dress-code for each of them accordingly.

Formal wear Most cruises have formal nights where attending guests are expected to dress up for the event.

Carry at least one formal outfit like a suit for men and a cocktail dress for women for these outings.

Light jacket Even if the weather is warm, evenings on the ship could sometimes get chilly.

So pack a light jacket or sweater to remain warm and comfortable in case the temperature comes down.

Comfortable footwear  Comfortable shoes that can be worn for exploring the various ports of call should be an extremely essential part of your packing list.

Good footwear will also come in handy for onboard activities, so also carry a pair of dressier shoes for formal events and dinners.

Remember each cruise line have their own dress codes with the specific type of clothing outlined highlighted for different type of day activities.

Choose clothes that are comfortable and appropriate for the activities you have in mind both onboard and at the ports of call.

If you are still wondering why take a cruise vacation, may be this article will help you decide. Family cruise vacations are a great value for money where you can see the world while unpacking just once.
