Cruise and hike: Combining coastal cruises with onshore walking adventures

Posted on May 29, 2025June 2, 2025 by jenny

A coastal cruise offers a relaxed way to enjoy the ever-changing picturesque shoreline, with optional land-based excursions, while enjoying the entertainment and informative onboard activities to enhance the overall sailing experience.

Cruise and hike: Combining coastal cruises with onshore walking adventures

Why not try sailing from the UK and go through idyllic coastal towns and secluded bays. Combine your laid-back cruise with leisurely, energetic discovery walks to get up close and personal with the incredible coastal landscape through an invigorating trek.

Moreover, modern cruise lines offer day-long walking trips along with optional guided tours and shore excursions as a part of their walker program, besides an onboard presentation about the history and the flora and fauna likely to be encountered on the way.

Whether you prefer short walks or multi-day treks, easy strolls or clambering up high mountain peaks, you can choose from any of these thrilling cruising and hiking trips to curate your own unique adventure itinerary.

Enticing Douro

Hike across the stunning Douro River Valley against the incompatible backdrop of rambling vineyards and and charming farms in one of the most unspoilt regions of Europe.

Enjoy wine tasting at the Sandeman Winery in the world’s oldest demarcated wine region.

Visit Porto, the “City of Bridges” and the “Golden City” of Salamanca and then travel to Lamego to trek in the Nossa Senhora dos Remédio, the Sanctuary of Our Lady.

Walk the Appalachian Trail

Your ticket to an adventure is going on a East Coast cruise through some exciting sea ports. Start by wandering through the cobbled streets of Baltimore and then get in touch with nature on the world’s longest hiking-only footpath, the legendary Appalachian Trail.

This 2194 mile long walk passes through 14 states, which include Maryland and New York and is perfect for both newcomers and avid walkers as the Appalachian Mountains offer incredible views of the picture-perfect landscape below.

Enjoy a dose of Polar adventure

Hiking in coastal Antarctica offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore the 14.2 square kilometres of the breathtaking landscapes of the White Continent. The extreme conditions and 98% of the surface being blanketed by ice, are other compelling reasons to hike here in selected locations.

Hike across the Antarctic Peninsula, the most unforgettable places on earth, for wildlife spotting as a part of a group of few people who ever get a chance to enjoy this untouched and remote part of the world.

Canada & Boston

If you are considering a cruise along the Atlantic, there are some great walking tours to be enjoyed in on a round trip from Boston that will take you to the estuary of the St Lawrence River into the city of Quebec in Canada.

Quebec City is over 400 years old and there are many delights in this cosmopolitan metropolis. Gaze in wonder at the intricate Chateau Frontenac and also take time out to explore Musee De la Civilisation. Stroll on Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown to immerse in the landscape of rolling farmlands and white sand beaches.

Fjords and Hikes: Norway cruises

If you are looking for a truly special way to cruise and walk and enjoy some spectacular scenery on the way, then consider cruising to Norway and nowhere else. This is by far the most beautiful European nation and the right place to take your next walk and cruise vacation.

With ports of call at places like Bergen, Stavanger and Oslo, you can never go wrong when hiking these fantastic places in Norway. Not to mention that there is every chance of seeing the magical Northern Lights on your epic Norwegian fjords cruise.

I’ve been to Quebec City and I can’t recommend it enough. The town itself is gorgeous and many walking tours are offered…The Norway cruises seem like an awesome idea…I would love to do it.

I love the thought of seeing new places and staying active without the full-on backpacking struggle. Definitely adding this to my bucket list!
