DIY Maileg mice

DIY Maileg Christmas costumes

Posted on December 6, 2025December 8, 2025 by jenny

Following the success of our Maileg Halloween costumes a few weeks ago, I thought it would be fun to make some Maileg Christmas costumes too. We love our Maileg mice, and at this time of year they are joined by the Maileg reindeer family too.

To make your own Maileg Christmas costumes you will need:

Cardboard tubes

Acrylic paint (white, red, brown)

Sharpies (black, orange, white)

Glue

Scissors/scalpel

Pom poms

We decided to make a few different costumes for our Maileg mice: a Christmas present, a snowman, a gingerbread man, a Christmas pudding and a Christmas tree. We painted the cardboard tubes in red, white, brown and green and set them aside to dry.

When the red tube was dry we cut armholes for our mice. We added a cardboard bow by trimming a tube into thin strips, painting them red and glueing them to make a bow.

The snowman costume was the easiest to make. We painted the cardboard tube white, trimmed it slightly and cut two arm holes.

Then drew on a snowman face.

Our Maileg gingerbread man wears a brown painted cardboard tube, trimmed so it can sit inside the tube. We cut two small holes for the arms to poke through. We added eyes, a mouth, bow-tie and buttons in white to look like icing.

We then did a little DIY costume to look like a Christmas pudding! This tube was painted brown with black dots for currants. We found a holly decoration to embellish the costume and hot glued it to the front of the tube. These costumes are so easy to make, and great for adding little embellishments you have in your craft stash.

Our final DIY costume was a Christmas tree, based on the cardboard tube Christmas trees we made a few years ago. We made our mouse costume the same way, cutting into the tube to make a tree shape and painting it green. Then we cut out the arm holes and added a bow and mini pompoms we found in our craft stash. I think this might be our favourite Maileg costume so far!

We can mix and match our handmade Maileg costumes this Christmas. My daughter will have so much fun adding our handmade Maileg costumes to our gingerbread house.
