Easy Day of the Dead kids craft

This year for the first time we had fun crafting around the theme of Day of the Dead. This is a Mexican festival celebrated over three days at the end of October and focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. We don’t have any Mexican connections but my Pinterest stream has been full of ideas so we joined in.

It’s been a while since we’ve tried printing with styrofoam but I thought a skull shape was perfect for this technique.

Equipment you will need:
styrofoam sheet
black paint
paint brush
white paper
rolling pin
glitter and stickers to decorate

This is a great craft to do with children as you don’t need any special equipment. I traced the shape of a skull onto a sheet of styrofoam (from a ready made pizza) using the end of a pen.

This is the one I finished off, I drew around the skull with a glitter pen and added some stickers. The children went craaaazy with the glitter, you’ll have to check out my Instagram to see their finished pictures!

Wow! The finished result is amazing, really evocative. I’ve always been intrigued by the idea of the day of the dead ever since I first heard if it, but never quite understood it properly. The idea if remembering your departed loved ones is lovely, I think it’s just the way it’s expressed -‘The Day of the Dead’ sounds quite blunt. Maybe, ‘The Day of the Dearly Departed’ would sound better?
