I’m always keen to try new creative things. I love learning and making things with my hands. Nothing beats leaving my family bubble for a few hours, getting out and meeting new people and hopefully picking up a new hobby. Aside from crafting with my children I love to indulge my hobby of sewing but I’m pretty open to trying new things.
I’ve tried keeping tabs on some of my favourite craft venues but it can be pretty time consuming looking through online calendars and reading newsletters trying to find what you’re looking for. So I was pretty excited to hear about a new site called Obby which helps you discover London’s favourite courses, classes and workshops.
I’ve been wanted to try crochet for a while. I see so many pretty pictures of blankets on Pinterest but also have a growing collection of crochet kits from Mollie Makes. I thought it was really time I tried to learn and nothing beats learning by experience. Obby helps you find almost any kind of course, from floristry to cooking, photography to writing. The site is really easy to use and I searched for crochet for beginners courses. You can do a simple search by topic or a more advanced search by location and the time of day you want to learn.
I found a few beginners crochet lessons at Tea & Crafting, a fun North London venue which I visited with my son a few years ago. Obby kindly offered to sponsor my lesson if I shared my experience with you! With my husband and children sorted for an evening without me, off I popped to North London. I didn’t need to take anything as a crochet hook, wool and instructions were all provided.
Once our small class of 10 has assembled our teacher got us started on chain stitch and double crochet stitch, following a pattern to crochet Granny Stripe. My photos may not look like much but I was finally crocheting!
I admit I didn’t find it particularly easy but the small class size helped and the teacher was lovely. Our class included some people who were wanting to brush up their skills, some total beginners like me and everyone in between. The 2 hours zoomed by and I left with my little piece of crochet which was the perfect starting point to make my own Granny Stripe blanket.
I can’t wait to pick my next class!
