Swap screens for scissors: Creative crafts to conquer your vacation

Posted on August 13, 2024May 21, 2025 by jenny

A vacation, apart from the excitement of exploring a new destination, allows for plenty of time to indulge in new hobbies and other activities that bring joy and relaxation.

Imagine sitting on the deck of a cruise ship on a sea day on your way to the Bahamas with the rhythmic sound of the waves and the gentle sea breeze providing the ideal backdrop for some creative inspiration. So the next time you are on vacation, consider swapping your digital devices with a pair of scissors and engage yourself in these hands-on creative activities that bring peace of mind which no screen can replicate.

Seashell crafts

If you are near a beach, seashells and seaglass can turn out to be a wonderful natural and local resource for crafting. Collect shells or seaglass of different shapes and sizes and use them to create pieces of art. You can make picture frames with the seashells, wind chimes or even decorate your mirror with them. Another crafty idea is to paint the seashells and use them to make jewellery.

Create your own souvenirs

Next time you are on vacation, create your own souvenirs instead of purchasing items of mass products retailed by the vendors. A one-of-a-kind handmade piece of jewellery or a painting will always evoke fond memories of the places you have visited.

For instance, if you are in the Bahamas, you can buy local hand-dyed fabrics which you can use for quilts, or locally sourced wool for knitting in your free time.

Decorate your stateroom door. If you are headed out on a cruise, this helpful idea of decorating your cabin door and posting a friendly note on it will be a fun way to show your appreciation to your cabin steward each day.

Additionally, with a long hallway full of panelled doors, it won’t be a surprise if you enter the wrong room. Decoration on board can be easily done with towel animals or use simple paper decorations, like origami, which are light and easy to install.

Knitting and crocheting

These easy to carry craft items are perfect to keep the mind engaged while traveling. All you need is to pack some yarn and needles in your suitcase and you can crochet or knit on the go.

Consider stitching a scarf or making a hat in colours and shades of some of the destinations you have visited which will serve as mementos back home.

Make a travel scrapbook

Collect souvenirs and mementos from your travels such as postcards, pressed flowers, admission ticket stubs etc to create a unique travel scrapbook. This could be a great idea for an ongoing activity on your vacation which will be fun and also end up with memories that will remind you of your adventures on the trip.

Drawing and painting

Carry some crayons and a sketchbook with you in order to capture the beauty of the surroundings you visit, even though you have never sketched before. Simply sitting down and attempting to draw can help create deep connections with the place you are visiting and bring peace of mind.

Let me know if you intend to craft on your holiday this year!
