A couple of weeks ago we made a special trip to Ikea to pick up the new Huset range, which is Swedish for ‘the house’, I previously wrote about. Like most households in the UK we have a fair amount of Ikea furniture, mainly Expedit bookshelves. Sitting and writing this I can see 3 of them!
My only worry – would the Ikea dolls house furniture fit with our other toys? Anyone else ever had a problem with their continental Ikea size bed not fitting UK bedding?
Anyway, the Huset living room sets feature their famous Expedit shelves, Klippan sofa, Stockholm rug, Vago outdoor chair, Lack side table and Famnig Hjärta pillow. The packaging it arrives in features illustrations of a lamp, clock, frame and books which can be painted and cut out.
I love the illustration on the box. I do think they missed a trick though as they could have made the packaging turn into a cardboard dolls’ house. Luckily for us we always have a plethora of cardboard so set to making our own.
We found a large box and cut one side off. We wanted to decorate the inside and found some scrapbooking paper and glued on small pieces in a haphazard way. Then the children placed the furniture inside and decided which of the cardboard pieces from the box they wanted to use. They had a great time re-arranging the furniture, placing different toys in the room and having some imaginative play.
The only problem was the size of our toys in comparison to the furniture. Big Dolly was too big, as was Medium Dolly and Little Dolly.
Cinderella, Vintage Playmobil man and the Lego Minifig Gingerbread man were too small. Mini Dolly was right at home on the Klippan sofa.
Hours of fun, and luckily the children are too young to be questioning the fact their toys don’t fit. Perhaps that’s next on Ikea’s agenda!
