A trip to the Andover Catfe

We recently found ourselves in the pretty Hampshire town of Andover and discovered there was a cat cafe there. My son loves cats so we booked a slot to have some tea and cakes whilst enjoying being surrounded by cats (we love a cat cafe!). A trip to the Andover Catfe A cat cafe is a delightful spot where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while being surrounded by adorable, friendly cats. These cafes are designed to offer a cozy, relaxing atmosphere where you can unwind and interact with resident cats. It’s a purr-fect place for cat…

Exploring Jane Austen’s House in Chawton

Did you know that in 2025 we will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen, one of my favourite British authors. She is as popular as ever and we are looking forward to having the opportunity to celebrate her life and works this year. We are already hooked on Miss Austen, the tv adaptation of Miss Austen by Gill Hornby, and we are looking forward to finding out about all of the events happening this year. Exploring Jane Austen’s House in Chawton A few years ago we decided to visit Jane Austen’s house is Chawton. This…

Food and Board Board Game Cafe

Over half term we made a visit to Food and Board, a Board Game Cafe in Yately. We love trying different Board Game Cafes, and find they are a fun place to entertain everyone, whilst enjoying drinks or lunch. We booked a 2 hour slot online and looked forward to trying some new games. Food and Board Board Game Cafe Food and Board have a games library of over 350 games. We usually opt for a game we know, such as Ticket to Ride or Carcassonne, but the owner recommended a game for us to try. Our only requirements were…

Exploring The Vyne with kids (and a dog)

Over half term we visited The Vyne, which is a beautiful Grade 1 listed house in Hampshire. The house developed over time and sits in a beautiful landscaped garden. Exploring The Vyne with kids (and a dog) The kids had a two week half term, so we found that most Halloween activities were over by the time we went away. However when we arrived at The Vyne we found they were running two activities: a Witch’s Recipe Trail and an autumn leaves colour wheel. We picked up both from the ticket booth and set off to explore The Vyne. Unfortunately…

    Poppy Fields at Winchester Cathedral

We were lucky enough to spend the week in the pretty little city of Winchester. The kids have a two week half term so we went away for the second week and took the dog. We stayed in a quirky Grade 2 listed cottage on Beggars Lane which was a short walk into the centre of Winchester. Winchester Cathedral dominates the city and we were able to visit during the day. It’s dog-friendly (like Canterbury Cathedral which we visited earlier this year), so we were all able to visit together. The Cathedral is notable for being the burial place of…

The museum has a collection of over 50 hovercraft of various designs in various conditions, and these can be visited at weekends and school holidays. Exploring Porchester Castle with kids

A few weeks ago we spent a few days exploring Gosport, on the south coast of Hampshire. I wanted to re-visit Porchester Castle and take the kids there so they could experience the amazing medieval fortress overlooking Portsmouth Harbour. Luckily we picked a sunny day which was just perfect for exploring Porchester Castle with kids. Exploring Porchester Castle with kids This site overlooking Portsmouth harbour has been a Roman fortress, a Norman stronghold and a prisoner of war camp during the Napoleonic Wars. There’s a small car park opposite the castle so we parked up and first walked around the…

    Exploring Portsmouth Dockyard with kids

Portsmouth Dockyard or Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is made up of a number of different attractions, including HMS Victory, HMS Warrior and the Mary Rose Museum. We thought it sounded like a great place to explore with the kids and spent a few days exploring Portsmouth Dockyard with kids. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is an area of HM Naval Base Portsmouth which is open to the public. It contains several historic buildings and ships. We found the ticket options really complicated but the kids used their Blue Peter badges for free entry whilst we purchased annual passes. These tickets included all the…

Sandham Memorial Chapel and Stanley Spencer’s paintings

When we returned from our week in Devon we decided to stop off at the Sandham Memorial Chapel. We are National Trust members and I really want to get our money’s worth and visit as many properties as we can this year. The Sandham Memorial Chapel was halfway on our journey home, so we decided to stop for a picnic and explore the Chapel and paintings of Stanley Spencer. Sandham Memorial Chapel and Stanley Spencer’s paintings “They don’t like war pictures, they rather look like Heaven …” Nestled in a quiet corner of Hampshire, Sandham Memorial Chapel hides an unexpected…
