I love to crochet. It’s simple and repetitive and perfect whilst watching a good series – I’ve just finished watching The New Look on Apple TV+, all about Christian Dior and Coco Chanel during the Second World War. I’ve also been working my way through any Dorothy Whipple novel I can find and thought I would crochet a simple bookmark to use. If you want to make your own you will need the following:
List of supplies:
Yarn
3.5 mm crochet hook
A pair of scissors
Tapestry needle
How to crochet a bookmark:
Step 1: Start by making a slip knot
Step 2: Work 36 chain stitches.
Step 3: After working all 36 chain stitches yarn over but do not make a chain stitch.
Step 4: Skip the next chain from hook and insert the hook into the 2nd stitch. Pull through the 2nd stitch on chain. You should have 3 loops on hook now.
Step 5: Insert hook into the next 3 stitches (3rd, 4th and 5th) and pull through from each. At the end you should have a total of 6 loops on hook.
Step 6: Yarn over.
Step 7: Pull through all 6 loops on hook.
Step 8: Chain 1.
Step 9: Insert your hook into the chain 1 space.
Step 10: Yarn over and pull through the chain 1 space. This pattern is called the “eye”.
Step 11: Next, insert your hook into the leg of the last stitch and yarn over and pull through.
Step 12: Insert your hook into the last chain and pull through.
Step 13: Then insert your hook into the following two chains and pull through from each. You should have a total of 6 loops on hook.
Step 14: Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops.
Step 15: Chain 1.
Step 16: Continue this pattern until row one is done.
Step 17: Make sure you count stitches correctly while working on row 1.
Step 18: Reached the end of row 1
Step 19: Turn the crochet pattern to the other side.
Step 20: Insert hook into the adjacent eye of the crochet pattern.
Step 21: Work 2 single crochet into the eye of the crochet pattern.
Step 22: Insert hook into the next eye of the pattern.
Step 23: Work 2 single crochet into the eye.
Step 24: Continue to make 2 single crochet into each eye of the pattern all the way to the other end.
Step 25: Reached the end of row 2?
Step 26: Insert hook into the side stitch of row one.
Step 27: Chain 1.
Step 28: Work a slip stitch and pull out a few inches of yarn. Cut off yarn from bundle.
Step 29: Make a tassel using the same yarn.
Step 30: Attach the tassel with the crochet pattern at its loose end and secure it.
It doesn’t take long to crochet a bookmark, in fact I made two!
