DIY gold foil Easter egg decorations

DIY gold foil Easter egg decorations

Posted on March 13, 2024March 17, 2024 by jenny

I saw some pretty recycled decorations made from the gold foil inside a tube of tomato puree so thought I would have a go. It was surprisingly fun so I thought I would share the results in case anyone else wants to try it. All you need to make your own recycled decorations are empty tubes of tomato or garlic puree. I tried both and got similar results with both types of tubes.

Clean out your tube

The most important part is to thoroughly clean your tube before crafting with it. To do this simply cut both ends off the tube with a pair of sharp scissors, then carefully cut down one of the long sides. Open up the gold foil and wash in warm soapy water to remove any traces of food. Now you have a lovely material to craft with.

Place the gold foil on a tea towel with the gold side facing down. Use the back of a spoon to gently rub out any bumps – don’t do this on the gold side or you may rub away the gold!

When you have a lovely smooth surface you can start to design your shapes. With Easter coming up at the end of the month I wanted to make some shiny gold eggs to hang on our little Easter tree. I found an Easter egg cookie cutter which I drew round to make the shape.

I squeezed four onto the gold foil and cut them out.

Then I used a sharp pencil to decorate each egg, leaving a small space at the top of each to hang them.

Using a small skewer I pierced the top of each one, so I could use thread to make a hanging loop.

They are currently hanging on a small Easter tree but you could make these DIY gold foil Easter egg decorations ad use them as gift tags too. Let me know if you try them!
