A few weeks ago I jumped at the chance to try my hand at candle painting. Have you heard of this craft trend? You can decorate or paint your own candles so they will match your decor. I thought this was a great opportunity to try a new craft, and make my own Valentine Day decor to brighten up our home.
Candle painting, or creating decorative designs on candles, has gained popularity as a creative and customisable form of expression. People enjoy personalising their living spaces, and candle painting provides a unique way to add artistic flair to everyday items. Additionally, the rise of DIY crafts and social media sharing has fuelled the trend, inspiring others to try their hand at this accessible and visually appealing hobby.
Candle painting can be relatively easy for beginners, as it typically involves simple techniques like layering colours, using stencils, or applying decals. However, more intricate designs may require practice and patience to master. It’s a creative and accessible DIY activity, making it enjoyable for those looking to explore their artistic side without requiring advanced skills.
Candle painting for beginners
To start candle painting, you’ll need some basic supplies:
Plain candles – choose un-scented, plain candles in various shapes and sizes
Acrylic paints – water-based acrylic paints work well for candle painting
Paintbrushes – small brushes for details and larger ones for broader strokes
Palette – a surface for mixing and blending your paint colours
Stencils or decals – these can help create precise designs, especially for beginners
Remember to protect your work area with newspapers, and make some space for your candles to dry. With these basics, you can start exploring the creative world of candle painting.
As I hadn’t tried the craft of candle painting before I was more than happy to try the candle painting kit from Fay & Mamie via Cosy Craft Club. The kit contained four white candles, three paint cones and a variety of stamps for making all sorts of patterns.
The paint cones are easy to use as you just snip the end off, hold like a pen, and paint your design on the candle. For Valentine’s Day DIY candles I used the red paint cone to add little hearts down the length of each candle. I started at the top of the candle, ensuring I added hearts all the way round.
The hearts were quite puffy and stood out well against the white of the candle.
Once I had painted my candle I placed it in a candle holder and set it aside to dry whilst I painted the next candle. It makes a lovely mindful craft as you can concentrate on what you are doing.
These have really brightened our mantle for Valentine’s Day. Candle painting is so easy that my teen decorated her own candles too! Let me know if you’ve tried this craft yet.
