The Gingerbread City 2023

The Gingerbread City 2023

Posted on December 12, 2023 by jenny

Last weekend we visited The Gingerbread City 2023 at Westfield White City.  The Gingerbread City is an annual pop up exhibition where everything has been created from freshly baked gingerbread, with the odd biscuit and sweet thrown in. The exhibition has been called ‘STEM meets sweets’.

The Gingerbread City 2023

The theme this year is Water in Cities and The Gingerbread City has been split into five distinct zones showcasing design ideas that respond to various water contexts: the Desert Landscape, Urban Floodplain, Canal City, Frozen Landscape, and Underwater and Floating City.

It had been a while since I had taken the kids to see The Gingerbread City so they were really excited to see it. The room was split into distinct zones which meant we were able to get close to the gingerbread creations. Some of the buildings were really imaginative.

The Gingerbread City 2023

We have been fortunate to visit The Gingerbread City before. We took the kids back in 2017 (no wonder they couldn’t remember it!) and I visited in 2019 too. It’s an annual event, brought to you by the Museum of Architecture – a UK based charity dedicated to finding new ways for the public to engage with architecture. Their mission is to show how architecture and great design can help tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems, like climate change.

The Gingerbread City 2023

Since 2016 The Gingerbread City has entertained over 120000 visitors and collaborated with thousands of architects and designers. It’s a really fun idea and you can also attend workshops to build your own creation.

We loved spending time looking at all the creations. My youngest did a quiz which meant she spent a lot of time looking for tiny things hidden amongst the buildings.

The kids especially enjoyed the domes which meant they could pop up in the middle of each zone for a closer look.

We had a lot of fun and got lots of inspiration to create our own gingerbread creations. You can visit The Gingerbread City which is open from 2nd December until the 7th January 2024 at Westfield White City.

It sounds like such a fantastic and creative experience, and the fact that it’s an annual event with different themes makes it even more appealing.
