Recycled Golden Syrup tin candles

Recycled Golden Syrup tin candles

Posted on March 11, 2023March 11, 2023 by jenny

I love to recycle items and found I had a few Golden Syrup tins which I had collected due to their pretty packaging. Lyle’s Golden Syrup is a British heritage brand and their tins are instantly recognisable. Occasionally they do special tins, such as the one created for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Edition in 2022. I do like to buy these kind of items then wonder what to do with them when I’ve used the contents!

The Lyle’s Golden Syrup tin was just the perfect shape to re-purpose into a unique candle, so I had a go. First of all I made sure my tins were clean by placing them in warm water, and leaving them to dry for a few day. Then I gathered my candle making equipment.

Lyle’s Golden Syrup tins hold 454g when full so I needed plenty of wax. I set up a bain-marie with a glass jug in a saucepan of boiling water and slowly melted my wax beads.

Whilst the wax was melting I was able to prepare the wicks by threading the candle wick through the metal sustainer.

I cut about 10cm of candle wick which was long enough to thread through the sustainer and leave a little extra at the top too.

Then I placed the candle wick and sustainer in the centre of each tin. You can attach a small piece of glue or blu-tack underneath the sustainer if you want to keep it central.

When the candle wax was fully melted I poured it into each tin. I let the wax settle for 10 minutes before topping it up. I left the candles to dry overnight.

I love my stylish, recycled candles. They make a great handmade gift and a lovely way to re-use and re-cycle too!

I really want to make my own candles, but have yet to try. I love the idea of using a iconic tin like the golden syrup tins x

These look amazing, great idea! I will have to create my own candles as I seem to collect a lot of the olive jars.
