How to make a cushion for your tablet

How to make a cushion for your tablet

Posted on June 8, 2022 by jenny

I love making handmade gifts. If you enjoy baking or crafting then it seems the natural step to make something using those skills. When we recently visited friends my daughter whipped up a batch of dog biscuits to take, and I love that she is so thoughtful and resourceful. Handmade gifts are fun to make because you can be mindful both in the process and in the giving. I’ve always found crafting such a relaxing hobby and today I wanted to share our DIY tablet cushion. My children love their screen time and I’m going to show you how to make a cushion for your tablet. You can make them using fabric from your stash or choose fabric that your child will love. You can probably guess what fabric my 10 year old chose!

DIY tablet cushion supplies:

1m of fabric and matching thread
Polystyrene balls or toy wadding to fill
Fabric scissors and pins
Measuring tape
Sewing machine

Press your fabric (I didn’t do this!) and fold your fabric in half. Measure and cut a piece 20cm x 25cm against the folded edge.

Turn the fabric with the right sides facing each other and pin through the two pieces of fabric along the three cut sides. I used my sewing machine to sew along one short side and one long side (you can do this step by hand if you don’t have a sewing machine).

Then turn your tablet cushion the right way. I used my Cricut Easy Press to gently press the creases out.

Then you need to make the bag into a cushion shape by gently folding the bag from the centre of the un-stitched end.

It sounds odd but you need this end to be at a 90 degree angle to the other end.

Carefully tuck in the edge of the fabric to create a 0.5cm seam and pin.

Sew about two thirds of the way along the edge, leaving enough of a gap to fill your cushion.

Fill your cushion with the filling of your choice. I used polystyrene balls but you could also use soft toy filling. Be careful not to overfill your cushion as you want there to be enough room for your tablet to get comfy! Then hand sew your tablet cushion closed.

I love the bright Pokemon fabric my daughter chose, and I made a similar one for my son in a London bus fabric. They are fun to use and keep a tablet propped up when being used. You can also scale the size down and make a smaller version for a phone!

This is such a good idea. Practical and cute too. I love the fabric that your daughter chose. x
