The Hillingdon Trail is a 20 mile path through Hillingdon’s countryside from Cranford in the south east to Harefield in the north west. Since we moved to Hillingdon we have been exploring parts of the Hillingdon Trail. One of our favourite spots is a walk along the canal to Black Jack’s Mill.

Exploring Jack’s Mill, Harefield

We walked from the car park at The Coy Carp and Copper Mill Lock. This is a great location to explore and stop for an afternoon drink! A few years ago we took the children on a special Santa canal boat trip run by the Hillingdon Narrowboat Association nearby.  Then we walked along the canal to Black Jack’s Mill. It’s a lovely walk with plenty to see. The Grand Union Canal was dug through Harefield between 1793 and 1797 and runs parallel to the River Colne.

The footpath is quite narrow but we enjoyed watching the narrowboats and looking for a geocache along the walk. It’s really popular with walkers and cyclists and dog walkers like us.

You can see from my photos that we’ve visited on a few occasions now and the weather has been really different each time.

We love to walk along to Black Jack’s Mill, the sweetest place to stop from refreshments. The former water mill was built at the time the canal was dug and the present gates at Jack’s Lock date from 1870.

We’ve only visited with the current restrictions which have meant sitting and drinking outside. However Jack’s Mill have a lovely outdoor seating area and dogs are welcome.

 

It’s a really fun place to sit and watch any canal traffic.
