I love working with Liberty fabric, even better if I have bought it directly from Liberty. A trip to Liberty is an experience and it’s been a while since I’ve had the joy of hopping on the tune to London, emerging at Oxford Circus and walking down to Liberty’s.

Liberty London

Liberty London, the designer department store selling luxury brands, was established in 1875 on Regent Street, in the West End. It’s well-worth a trip if you are in London and I love everything, from the flower stall outside to the beautiful miniature glass paintings in the windows (taken from HMS Impregnable and HMS Hindustan), and especially the carved wooden animals hidden around the store.

The fabric department can be found on the Fourth Floor and there is a huge stock of fabric for furnishings and dressmaking. My favourites have to be the gorgeous Liberty Tana Lawn cotton range which is perfect for sewing projects.

My little Liberty book of fabric

I have built up such a collection of Liberty fabrics, mainly Liberty Tana Lawn, that I started a little notebook – my little Liberty book of fabric.

The idea is that every time I buy some Liberty fabric I add a swatch to my little Liberty book of fabric.

There is space to write where I bought it from, how much it cost, as well as where I have used it.

It makes a great visual reminder, as well as the prettiest keepsake.

Each page is different but filled with the prettiest scraps of fabric. Some I’ve already used in quilts and some are kept for another day.

I like the fact my little book is a work in progress. It sits on my desk and I can pull it out whenever I want to look up the name of a piece of Liberty fabric, or add a note when I’ve used a piece. I’m looking forward to it filling up over the years.
