So I finally finished something! The Shipping Forecast quilt I started (a long time ago) is finally finished and I have to admit that I feel a bit flat without my long-term WIP hanging around. My last update was in March when I had pinned the three layers of my quilt sandwich together. I knew it wouldn’t take me long to finish it.
The fabric I had originally bought wasn’t really long enough to use as binding, and my quilt backing shrunk a little as I quilted the layers. I trimmed the edges to make sure they were neat and ordered some gorgeous ready-made Liberty binding to finish my Shipping Forecast quilt.
I pinned the binding around the four edges of my quilt, making sure to mitre the four corners as I went along. I chose a really pretty Liberty print which complimented the colours of my quilt. Then I hand stitched the binding on. This is actually one of my favourite parts of making a quilt.
There is something really relaxing about sitting and stitching binding on a quilt. It didn’t require much thought and was completed in a few evenings. And that was my quilt finished. Here’s a terrible photo of my kids holding it for scale. They were pretty proud of me for finally finishing it, and I’ve even let them use it when they’ve wanted to snuggle under it.
The front of the Shipping Forecast quilt features a map of the United Kingdom with the different areas of the Shipping Forecast quilted on. The back is a patchwork of my favourite blue and white fabrics. The quilt is bound with Wiltshire Curacao blue and white Liberty bias binding. The pattern is based upon Janet Clare’s Shipping forecast quilt in her book Hearty Good Wishes.
