Making String Art for the home

Making String Art for the home

Posted on July 5, 2018 by jenny

2018 is my year of trying new crafts. I’m still making time for my favourite crafts of paper cutting and sewing but I like the challenge of trying new ones too. So far this year I’ve made my own candles and tried making my own cards.

Making String Art for the home

For Christmas my husband gave me a String Art Kit. I’m not sure this is something I would have ever bought myself but I’m always happy to try something new.

String Art Kit

The String Art Kit contained a wooden base board, nails, paper templates and 4 embroidery threads. I picked one of the designs and attached it to the base board with some washi tape. Then started hammering the nails in, which was fun.

Then I have to admit that I never got round to tying the string on. Today was the day I finally finished it! I’m not sure what was holding me back but I’m pretty bad at half finishing things.

I removed the paper template and picked the colours I wanted to use. Then I started tying the strings around the nails, holding the ends of the thread securely with a dab of nail varnish.

It was actually fun and I watched a couple of episodes of the second series of Queer Eye while I made it which led to a few mistakes!

I like my snow capped mountains and the colours are quite calming so it’s perfect to display at home.

Although I used a kit to make this string art it would be super simple to use the templates or make up my own. All you need is a decent piece of wood and nails which you can get from your local DIY shop. There are endless possibilities to make your own string art and it’s such a lovely way to add some handmade touches to your home.

I love mountain scapes, we have many different prints and photos in our living room (both keen hikers). This looks like something that would be perfect to add to our collection. I’ll have to try it!

Wow! This looks so intricate, and so pretty – such a simple idea but works so well!
