This is the first year that my children’s school has celebrated World Book Day. Previously they have given out the tokens but never asked the children to dress up. I always enjoyed looking at my Facebook feed and seeing what everyone dressed their children up as, this year it was our turn to take part!
My daughter loves dressing up but my son never has. I asked them both what they wanted to be. My 5 year old immediately said Batman! We’ve never read a Batman book but we were lucky to receive one when we attended The Lego Batman Movie premiere last month. We already had the costume so that was my daughter sorted.
My 6 year will pretty much only read Star Wars books. He adored the Jedi Academy series but didn’t want to dress up as the main character Roan. then he said Yoda but we’re on a bit of a budget so I said no. We’ve read a lot of Roald Dahl books together so decided on George, from George’s Marvellous Medicine.
Now you probably know that George is an 8 year old boy so the costume was pretty simple. Today my son dressed in normal ‘weekend’ clothes, grabbed his copy of the book and we made our very own bottle of George’s Marvellous Medicine.
How to make George’s Marvellous Medicine bottle
You may remember the children had lots of fun recreating George’s Marvellous Medicine in our mud kitchen one summer. We wanted to make something he could take into school so we found an empty plastic bottle and a variety of acrylic paint. We poured the paint into the bottle and made sure it coated the inside of the bottle and left it to dry. I poured away any excess and my son made a label for it.
Both my children were happy to go to school this morning. They loved seeing their friends dress up (there were a *lot* of Harry Potter/Hermione Grainger’s) and I loved our easy no-costume World Book Day costume. I’m winning at parenting today!

This is a genius idea! My son doesn’t want to dress up anymore (he is also 8) and we have just read Georges Marvellous Medicine. Plus I hate the waste of buying a costume for one day. Thank you.
