Liberty fabric envelope tutorial

Liberty fabric envelope {a Valentine make}

Posted on February 7, 2017February 1, 2023 by jenny

I love making handmade gifts so today I’m sharing a sweet little Liberty fabric envelope I made. I thought this would be a fun sewing project and would be just the right size for a card and some sweets.

I really enjoyed choosing the right fabric. Surely this is the best part of the creative process? I admit I got completely sidetracked as my fabric stash is all over the place since we decorated our spare room. I was looking for some Liberty pieces I knew I had and found so many other prints and patterns which reminded me of previous projects! I had a little sort out which I’m sure will make my husband happy, and finally sat down to make some Valentine gifts for my family.

You will need:
Paper envelope template
Two pieces of contrasting fabric – for the envelope and the lining
Sewing machine
Basic sewing supplies

How to make a Liberty fabric envelope

I found an envelope template online but you could always deconstruct an envelope if you have one you like the shape of. Place your fabrics right side together, lay your template on top and draw around it with a pencil. Pin your layers and cut out your fabric, leaving a small 1cm seam allowance.

Use your sewing machine to sew over the pencil lines, leaving a small gap for turning the fabric the right way.

Make sure you trim the fabric to avoid any extra bulk, especially around the folds of your envelope. Hand sew the opening closed.

Press the seams with an iron to make the edges lovely and crisp and topstitch around the edge if you wish. Then fold the sides and lower edge of the envelope up, keeping them together with a few stitches.

It makes a sweet little fabric envelope, perfect for holding a little Valentine card or some sweets. You could personalise it with a little name tag or fabric stamp stitched to the front if making more than one.

    What a really lovely, thoughtful gift this would make. I would love to give or receive this. It doesn’t look too complicated either so good for all levels. It is so cute.
