Embroidery hoop Christmas decorations {Sew this is Knitmas}

This is a commissioned post in collaboration with White Stuff.

Recently I’ve been working on a really fun collaboration with White Stuff as part of their #SewThisIsKnitmas festive fun. They sent me some of their fabulous offcuts and challenged me to make a unique Christmas decoration with it. This was a great excuse to browse Pinterest for some crafting inspiration!

Not only do White Stuff make gorgeous clothes but their print and patterns are beautiful too. I love White Stuff and have some key pieces which I just love; the quirkier the pattern the better for me.

They sent me some lovely pieces of fabric and I knew they would be perfect for making into a fabric banner using embroidery hoops. I’ve made a video tutorial! You can see it here but I’m also going to share brief instructions below:

You will need:
4″ wooden embroidery hoop
White Stuff fabric offcuts
PVA glue
Red felt
Fusible web
Bakers twine
Basic sewing kit

DIY embroidery hoop Christmas decorations:

I wanted to make the word NOEL using my lovely fabric offcuts and some wooden embroidery hoops. First I sprayed the hoops with white paint and left them to dry. Then I cut out the letters for NOEL on card and used these as a template on a piece of fusible wedding. I ironed these on to the back of a piece of white fabric and cut out each letter.

I removed the paper backing and ironed them on to my darker fabrics so each letter would really stand out. I added a running stitch around each letter but you could also do this on a sewing machine. Then I placed the fabric in each frame, making sure the letters were in the centre and tightened the screw.

I added a thin layer of PVA glue around the frame and folded the fabric over. I then glued a circle of red felt to hide the back of the embroidery frame.

I have hung my embroidery hoop decorations so added a loop of bakers twine through the screw.

  2. These are such pretty decorations. I had no idea White Stuff did things beyond clothes. I’ll need to have a proper look next time I’m near one!
