Monthly Makes – January 2016

I have let my monthly round ups slip in recent months. The end of last year was insanely busy. This year is all about making time for me and spending more time on doing the things which make me, and therefore my family, happy. Unless you’ve been living under a cloud you’ll have probably noticed I’ve been sharing lots of pictures of the Liberty quilt I have been stitching this month.

Making

I started and finished my Liberty rainbow quilt which I am so pleased about. I am terrible at buying fabric and never making anything so I’ve started the year with a bang. I bought the strips pre-cut so the top was quick to stitch. I stitched them together in groups of 5 to make sure my fabric didn’t go wonky when I was sewing it. This also made me feel like I was making progress as stitching long lines can be a little tedious.

I was originally going to make my own binding from the backing fabric, more beautiful Liberty fabric. However, I had a change of heart and folded the material from the back, using Clover clips to keep everything in place. I’ve used this technique a few times and really like it. I machine quilted ‘in the ditches’ every two strips and hand-stitched the binding.

Despite it being Winter I have used a light weight batting. The Liberty prints suggest Summer picnics and warm days to me and it hasn’t seemed to stop my daughter snuggling underneath it at bedtime. I think this is the largest quilt I’ve made so far, and definitely the prettiest.

This month I also tried my hand at the Mollie Makes Paper Gems Kit which was fun and have made lots of things with the children.

Baking

January was the month of Tunnocks Caramel Wafer cupcakes, Betty Crocker Spiced Ginger Cake and our rude word Valentines’ biscuits.

Visiting

This was a great month for seeing exhibitions. I’ve managed to visit both the Alice in Wonderland exhibition at the British Library and The Crime Museum at the Museum of London. Last but not least, I squeezed in another trip to the West End to the Hobbycraft Spring/Summer press show.
