How to make Stick Man from felt

Posted on July 16, 2015August 6, 2021 by jenny

We’ve been reading a lot of books lately and one of our favourites’ is Stick Man by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.

“Stick Man lives in the family tree With his Stick Lady Love and their stick children three.”

But it’s dangerous being a Stick Man. A dog wants to play with him, a swan builds her nest with him. He even ends up on a fire! Will he ever get back to the family tree?

Last year we made our own Stick Man from a stick. My children are always picking up sticks and leaves from our walks and we made a really simple version wtih pipe cleaners and googly eyes. This year I wanted to make a different version for my 3 year old. Have you ever seen the cover of the Gruffalo’s Child, another favourite book by the same author and illustrator? On the cover the Gruffalo’s Child holds his own Stick Man and this is the one I recreated.

I drew a rough sketch on a piece of paper and made a template (you can download my felt stick man template here).

Then I pinned my template to two pieces of brown felt and cut it out.

I used my sewing machine to stitch the two pieces together but you could easily sew this by hand. Just before I stitched the gap closed I inserted a pipe cleaner so the arms and legs could be moved.

I’m quite taken by our little Stick Man and it means we can recreate the story for ourselves.

I love your little Stick Man from felt! I will add him to my retelling now that I have a nice pattern! Thanks for your great idea! I fell in love with Stick Man last year and made a TPT product to go along with the book. It’s also mentioned as a post on my blog, One Real Reader. I’m going to pin this post so that others can see another great addition to that book!

My mistake! I checked back through all of my old posts and I did not post about Stick Man, but I will come November so all of the gingerbread men stories can have a new companion! I guess I thought I did because I was writing so very long when I put together the unit!
    Book love!
