I love to craft with my children so was excited to get my hands on a copy of 3D Art Adventures: Over 35 Creative, Artist-Inspired Projects in Sculpture, Ceramics, Textiles and More by Maja Pitamic and Jill Laidlaw. Three-dimensional art – whether sculpture, ceramics, installations, textiles or collage – combines the visual with the physical, making it perfect for kids who enjoy using their hands and getting a little messy.

3D Art Adventures introduces both adults and children to key works of three-dimensional art, which encompass a wealth of styles from ancient Greek sculpture to contemporary installations – and uses those works to inspire related art activities. You don’t need to know anything about art history, because a short explanation of each sculpture, ceramic, textile or installation is given along with the activities, as well as suggestions for how to explore the artworks further. Most importantly you don’t even need to be able to draw, because all the projects are simple, easy to follow and designed with children in mind.

My 6 year old has been reading the book and was inspired by the Forever Bicycles installation by Al Weiwei. After reading about the piece of art he wanted to try the related pipe-cleaner bike project. This was a quick activity for him and turned out quite well.

To enhance your adventures in art, you will find artists’ biographies, a helpful glossary of art-related terms and a list of locations where you can see the featured artworks in person at the back of the book. Furthermore the ‘Tools of the trade’ page will give you some extra pointers that will help you make the most out of each activity. This is a great book to share with young children but is equally suitable for older children and adults too.
