Every year we plant sunflower seeds in the hope we will have a stunning display of sunflowers. Every year they seem to get bigger and bigger. This year we have more time on our hands so we turned our wooden pallet mud kitchen into a planting station. It felt good to tidy it all up, sort out our plant pots and seeds and spend time outside.

This year I bought a few extra seed trays and different types of sunflower seeds. I didn’t know there was more than one variety but we bought a pack of 6 different sunflower seeds, and planted them up in sections, so we can see what grows best in our garden. I also treated myself to a small greenhouse so the seed trays didn’t take over my kitchen windowsill!

My daughter loves being outside and we’ve really enjoyed having the opportunity to do some gardening together. She doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty and enjoyed filling the trays with soil and counting out the seeds. She carefully wrote labels for the different types of seeds – a great way of getting her to write during lockdown!

It’s been a few weeks now since we planted our seeds and the kids have been really good about watering them when they need it. We placed the seed trays in our little greenhouse which gets sun in the early morning but then shade for the rest of the day. It’s so much fun to watch them growing.

Growing sunflowers is something that anyone can do. They are easy to start off of a sunny windowsill and then plant outside when they are strong enough or there are no more frosty mornings.

This is so lovely – we keep meaning to plant some sunflower seeds and grow some. If we do, I’ll definitely be downloading this!

I really love your planting station – we have a pallet garden under the tree for shady plants. I often suggest people plant sunflowers with their children as it’s such a great way to start gardening. Thanks for the colouring book – I’ll suggest people download it too.
