Crafting rainbows

Crafting rainbows {experimenting with rope weaving}

Posted on September 22, 2019 by jenny

I haven’t had much crafting time lately but I really wanted to make a subscription box I treated myself to earlier this year. Have you heard of MakeBox+Co? They make monthly craft subscription boxes and past themes have included a succulent planter kit, vintage inspired bag making kit, Peony and Eucalyptus wreath kit and a watercolour box kit. As soon as I saw the pastel coloured Rainbow Rope Weaving kit I had to buy it. I just love rainbows and wanted to try a new craft.

Crafting rainbows and experimenting with rope weaving

I paid £24.99 for my craft box with £3.95 shipping costs for my Over the Rainbox box. It contained three crafts – a Rainbow Rope Weaving kit, Little Rainbow Necklace and a stitched card. The supplies included a 8 balls of pastel coloured wool, wire, needle, rope, embroidery thread, accessories and instructions.

The first project I wanted to try was the Rainbow Rope Weaving kit. I’d never tried it before but it sounded quite simple. I cut the rope into 6 different lengths, wrapped each one with wire, then covered it in wool. Each band took quite a while but it was a fun craft to make whilst watching Strictly!

My arm hurt after doing such a repetitive process but it was fun to see it coming together. The wire gave it a little bit of structure so you could bend it into a rainbow shape. I added a few cheeky stitches at the back to keep each piece of rope together and added a piece of ribbon to hang it.

The same principles were behind the smaller Little Rainbow Necklace. I chose to use my own colours for this project, picking lovely Autumnal hues from my embroidery threads. I also used some thin florist wire as the one supplied with the kit was too thick. I cut the rope into four short lengths, added a piece of wire, then wrapped each one with the embroidery thread. As this was a smaller project it didn’t take long to make. I embellished it with a wooden bead and some pretty seed beads.

The final craft project in the subscription box was a Rain Clouds and Rainbows postcard. I’ve made a few of these stitched cards before and they are fun. I raided my embroidery threads stash for some rainbow colours and stitched the card to make a sweet rainbow.

I really liked the three projects in the box and thought it was good value. The instructions were thorough and I enjoyed trying rope weaving, I’m not sure I’ll ever do it again but it was interesting to try.

Have you ever tried rope waving before or a crafty subscription box?

    How lovely! I think these are such cute crafts and the stitched rainbow would be lovely to frame 🙂

    This is pretty impressive, we used to make these crafts when I was young though yours turned out better.
