Seasonal adventures in needle felting

Posted on October 27, 2018 by jenny

I’ve been on a bit of a roll the last few days. Not only did I finish a 3D Spooky House papercut but I also made a kit I treated myself to at the Knitting and Stitching Show earlier this month. I’ve always wanted to try needle felting and I’ve bought a few kits over the years. I have to admit to not really getting much further than opening them and putting them away again!

I’m always so scared to try new things, I’m not really sure why. However, this year I’m challenging myself to try new things so I bought myself the little Pumpkin Kit. I was out with a friend and told her I would Whatsapp her a picture when I’d made it. I gave myself a deadline of Halloween too!

Seasonal adventures in needle felting

The kit I picked up at the Knitting & Stitching Show was a Woollie and Feltie Kits. They had a really eye-catching display and I couldn’t resist their pumpkin kit. The kit contained a core wool ball, extra core wool, finer merino orange wool, two felting needles, a needle felting block, green wool for the stem and black wool for the face.

So yesterday I gave myself a stern talking too and attempted to needle felt. And do you know what? I loved it!

The wool was so soft the kids kept running away with it so they could touch it. All I had to do was place a piece of wool over the wool ball and stab it with the felting needle. Some magic happened and made the fibres intertwine and hold together.

When I had covered the core wool ball with the orange felt, I added a small stalk and a face. And that was it.

He is so soft and fluffy. We’ve added him to our Halloween decorations but I can easily see us keeping out a little longer than the other decorations. I was surprised how much fun needle felting was and can’t believe I put it off for so long. Now I’ve made my little pumpkin I’ve dug out all the other kits I bought so I can make those too!

I’ve never had a go at felting. Your pumpkin looks very effective and it looks easier than I thought it would be
