How to make conker caterpillars

Every day we walk past a beautiful horse chestnut tree. Actually we walk past it four times on the way to drop my son off at Junior School then go on to Infant school. We’ve been picking up conkers for about 6 weeks and have a huge collection of all kinds of shapes and sizes.

Sadly, the conkers have done nothing to deter the gigantic spiders which keep coming indoors. I’m not sure if that’s a myth or not, but I would gladly keep a few conkers around the house if they kept spiders away.

We have so many conkers that we really needed to make something with then and came up with the idea of conker caterpillars. They are so easy to make and great for practising those fine motor skills.

How to make conker caterpillars

We used lots of conkers – make a hole through each one with a metal skewer

pipe cleaners

Bostik Glu Dots

Googly eyes

Thread the conkers on to the pipe cleaner. Make sure you fold each end of the pipe cleaner to stop the conkers falling off. This is a great craft activity for practising those fine motor skills! Something both my children need to do as they are still struggling with buttons on their school uniform!

When you’ve created a lovely long string of conkers add on the goggly eyes. We used Bostik Glu Dots to attach the eyes to the first conker. The end of the pipe cleaner looks just like a mouth!

These are a lovely autumnal craft for kids to make. We could only find a few conkers when we looked this morning. I wonder what everyone does with them?
