It’s been a while since we made any sun catchers but, along with the conkers my children keep picking up, they’ve brought home a lot of leaves too. We have a very short walk to the school gates but it seems like we walk past a lot of different trees. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to learn more about trees and leaves.
Autumn leaves sun catchers craft for kids
fallen leaves picked up on our way to and from school
coloured cellophane sheets
First we picked the leaves which were whole and drew around them on the card.
We went round each leaf with a black sharpie and I cut out the middle.
I placed contact paper on one side and let me children cover them with cellophane sheets. They tried to pick the colours that the real leaves were.
We found loads of amazing information on the Woodland Trusts’ Nature Detectives website, including a free Autumn leaf ID sheet which helped us identify the tree our leaves came from. Little Sis wrote the type of tree next to each leaf.
It felt good to use the leaves the children have been collecting. The trees are beginning to look a little bare and for once I am not looking forward to winter so much. I really dislike the dark evenings – although my children have been going to bed much earlier than usual!
