Recycled cardboard tube seed pots

Today I’m taking part in Project: recycle and create, a monthly blog celebrating eco-friendly creativity in children. This months theme was cardboard tubes which we always seem to have plenty of, except when you need them! I have been asking everyone to save their cardboard tubes this month so we had a few to play around with to make recycled cardboard tube seed pots.

I cut a standard cardboard tube in half using my Swann Morton blade.

I placed one half to one side. Using a pair of scissors I cut about a third of the way down the tube. I did this four times, trying to keep the distance between the cuts the same. Then I started folding over the four pieces, gently making a crease with my fingers.

Tuck the final piece inside the first so your tubes keep their shape.

I did this with as many tubes as I could find. I made a few mistakes along the way. If you make your snips too short the flaps don’t cover the bottom and you risk soil falling out. If you make your snips too long then the flaps are too big and your seed pot won’t sit flat.

When the recycled seed pots were made we could do the really fun part – filling them with soil and planting our seeds. The pots are the perfect size for starting off seeds. We placed ours on a little tray so we can move them around and find the sunniest spot. Fingers crossed out seeds grow and we have something to show soon. The best thing about these recycled pots is that the whole thing can be planted when the seeds are established in their pots.

What a good idea, love the eco aspect of this. Good to instil in children from young.

This is a really clever idea. My gran also uses cardboard tubes to help plants grow upwards if their stems are not strong!
