Thomas the Tank Engine cupcakes

I looked at my toddler the other day and realised he was dressed head to foot in Thomas clothes – hat, jumper, tshirt, shorts, socks <sigh>. I love him to bits but his Thomas obsession is everywhere! Fortunately for him we were sent some brilliant sugarettes from JustBake who sell all kinds of cupcake decorations, featuring the little blue engine and two of his friends to use at our next baking session.

Hard to believe right now but last week it was raining so we got out the measuring bowl and got baking. We made some simple fairy cakes (using a delicious Mary Berry recipe). The toddler just loves baking, he brings his Tripp Trapp into the kitchen which is the perfect height so he can add the ingredients into the bowl and mix them all together. I love the look on his face until he starts to go a bit manic. We then had a bit of a tussle over pouring the batter into the cupcake cases but in the end I just let the toddler get on with it as he was having so much fun.

When the cakes had cooked and cooled we mixed up some icing and added the sugarettes. I think these are much better than the wafers we’ve previously used from the Green’s Thomas cake kit. There are only three types of sugarettes (Thomas, Percy and James) but the toddler loved them and also ate them rather than taking them off before eating the cake! A big hit all round.
