Cheap nappies?

Posted on November 7, 2011 by jenny

One of our biggest expenses is nappies. We’ve always used the same brand as they are reliable and work for us. However, I recently saw a discussion on twitter that suggested quite a lot of people were using supermarket own brand nappies. Cheap nappies? Yes please!

The other day I was out with a friend and asked her if she’d ever tried a supermarket brand. She hadn’t so we bought some and split the pack of 20 – a mere 75p each! We opened the pack (feeling like a naughty school child opening a pack of sweets!) and the first thing I noticed was that the nappies felt quilt bulky and the plastic was very cheap but we both decided to give them a go.

My husband was horrified that I even wanted to try them but over a couple of days I did and they were ok. They weren’t brilliant but as long as you kept an eye on them, and changed Edward promptly, they were fine. They didn’t seem as absorbent as our usual nappy but we only had one major leakage due to wee which was completely my own fault. I wasn’t brave enough to try them overnight but I would definitely use them again. Plus Edward didn’t seem to notice anything different!

What do you think about own brand nappies? Is it worth saving money or would you rather have 100% peace of mind with the more expensive brands?

I have only ever used the Sainsburys Eco ones because my mum keeps a stash at her house as back-up. They seem to work pretty well although we did have an escaping poo recently that amazingly went unnoticed (I know!) and ended up in a broom. Nice. But I am a cloth girl myself…… don’t get me started on the cost benefits!

I found Tesco stores own brand to be better than the named brand I had been using. I do product testing so I get samples of both stores own and the big name brands to try.

I recently tested some Tesco ones for them (having found that only one big brand kept all his pee in after trying several supermarket ones and the other big name brand). We had to go up a size compared to normal, and they were really bulky and papery (not as soft as the usual ones). But there was only one wee leak. Personally I stick with the brand – I get lots of offers on them, and know they work for us. I think it’s good if you could spend a day or 2 trying others but to buy a full pack which could then be wasted isn’t worth the hassle to me.

I was bought a pack of Sainsburys value nappies. Never again but Morrisons own are great and I am pretty sure it was Lidl we were in once and had to try there’s and they were good too. :o)

I must say I’m a snob when it comes to nappies-I only ever use huggies or pampers although this did make for interesting reading! Maybe I would give them a go to see for that price, I would be very interested! Great post hun x

I was recently given a bag of sainsbury’s own size 2 and compared to te Pampers and Huggies they’re proving a success. I was so surprised as I’m a bit of a nappy snob but as the own brands are so much cheaper I’ll be trying them out again!
