WonderWorks Margate (aka Hornby Museum)

Posted on November 6, 2024 by jenny

A trip to WonderWorks Margate (aka the Hornby Museum) is an immersive journey into the world of model trains, planes, and automobiles, offering a fascinating glimpse into the legacy of one of the UK’s most iconic toy manufacturers. Situated on the outskirts of Margate, the museum is housed in the former premises of the Hornby Hobbies factory, a building that played a crucial role in the production of Hornby trains and other beloved toys over the decades.

As you step into the museum, you’re greeted by an array of meticulously crafted model trains that trace the history of British rail transport. Hornby’s intricate train sets were first introduced in the early 20th century, and the museum showcases an impressive collection, including vintage models that take you back to the golden age of railway travel. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a newcomer to the world of model railways, the beautifully displayed locomotives, carriages, and stations are a treat for the eyes.

One of the highlights of the Hornby Museum is the impressive model railway layouts, where you can watch miniature trains glide along meticulously recreated landscapes. These detailed dioramas bring to life the charm of British countryside and urban settings, with realistic features like tunnels, bridges, and tiny villages. The atmosphere is nostalgic, evoking a sense of childhood wonder as you marvel at the precision of each miniature scene.

In addition to the trains, the museum also celebrates Hornby’s extensive history in producing model aircraft and cars. Vintage model planes hang from the ceiling, capturing the evolution of aviation design over the years. Meanwhile, a dedicated section features the iconic Hornby cars and buses, which were a staple of many childhood playrooms. The diversity of the collection offers a great opportunity to see how Hornby toys evolved over time and how they reflected broader cultural and technological changes.

For those interested in the history behind the brand, the museum also offers fascinating displays about the company’s origins and the people who shaped its success. You’ll find old advertisements, photographs, and packaging that trace the company’s journey from its beginnings in the 1920s to its status as a global leader in the toy industry.

Hornby Museum

Visiting the Hornby Museum is more than just a trip down memory lane—it’s an experience that connects you to the history of one of Britain’s most enduring and beloved brands. The museum is a perfect blend of nostalgia, craftsmanship, and British ingenuity, making it a must-see destination for families, toy enthusiasts, and anyone with an appreciation for well-crafted models and the rich history of play. Although we didn’t take our kids I know they would have enjoyed it as there were lots of ways to get hands on with trains, scalextric and more.

There’s a well stocked shop and tea room too! After exploring the museum, you can enjoy the nearby Kent coastline or drive into Margate for a trip the famous Main Sands or Dreamland, the oldest surviving amusement park in the country.
