Win gingerbread kits from The Best Bit

Posted on November 24, 2020November 14, 2021 by jenny

I’m not sure where my love of gingerbread came from but it’s something I love to be surrounded by, especially at Christmas. The smell is really special to me and my house is often filled with the smell of gingerbread biscuits, my favourite after school snack to bake.

Thankfully my kids have inherited my love of gingerbread and have been helping me ‘test’ products I bought for my Gingerbread Gift Guide. I’m delighted to share with you a review of two gingerbread kits from The Best Bit. Read on for your chance to win the same!

The Best Bit

The Best Bit host amazing gingerbread decorating parties all year round. Their gingerbread houses are baked to order and available via post so you can throw your own party at home! All the ingredients are sourced in Britain where possible (although they’re still looking for British ground ginger!). Each kit contains pieces to assemble, royal icing mix, quality sweets, a piping bag and instructions. That’s not all, the packaging is all recyclable, biodegradable or compostable too.

Gingerbread town houses and cottages

From Classic Gingerbread Houses to the Town House, Cottage and Farm House, The Best Bit have all your gingerbread needs covered. We were kindly gifted a Gingerbread Town House and Cottage to try at home.

Gingerbread decorating is the perfect family activity and we had a lovely afternoon building and decorating our gingerbread kits. Everything was included so all we needed to do was mix up the icing.

mixing icing

The children were excited to have a crafty afternoon and we split into two teams to see who could decorate the best. Everything fitted perfectly into the box which meant they arrived in perfect condition. We read through the instructions and mixed up our icing, placing it in the piping bag. Then it was time to build and decorate.

gingerbread decorating

First we built the Town House and Cottage, leaving the icing to harden for an hour. The instructions were easy to follow and the gingerbread smelled really good. Each kit included a bag of colourful sweets, my daughter was delighted with her mini candy cane.

They are both sweet demons but managed to stop themselves from eating everything. They loved decorating their houses and icing and sweets ended up everywhere.

gingerbread decorating

There were plenty of sweets and the kids went a little crazy with their decorating.  Adults would probably go for a more sophisticated icing scheme but my two ended up trying to pile on as many of the sweets as they could, scaffolding everything with more and more icing!  They had so much fun and it was impossible to judge the best one underneath all that icing.

I had a book of fairy tales as a child, and the illustration of the witch’s cottage in Hansel and Gretel was gorgeous. It was the most fantastical gingerbread cottage covered all over with icing and sweets. It had a garden of flowers made from sweets, and from the chimney came pink candyfloss smoke.
