Win a family bundle worth £300 with Center Parcs

Posted on October 15, 2015February 26, 2025 by jenny

I don’t know about you but I’m determined to let my children have the one I remember. I remember bike rides, making fairy potions from my mum’s herb garden, sunbathing in the garden with my sister and building forts from deck chairs and picnic blankets. My childhood seemed uncomplicated but I’m not sure my children will be able to say the same.

At 3 and 5 years old they love to play with their Sylvanian Families toys (her) and Lego sets (him).  They craft, they make mud pies in our mud kitchen and ride their bikes. However they also love screen time which at the moment is limited to 30 minutes a day – if they have done their jobs and behaved.

My children are surrounded by technology and are growing up in a very different world than I did. We have smartphones, tablets, laptops, a tv and numerous games consoles. A recent BBC article, which cited a Childwise report, stated that children now spend six hours or more on screens every day. That’s a 50% increase compared with figures from 1995. Teenage boys spend the longest, with eight hours screen-time each day, while 8-year-old girls spend three and a half hours.

I found these numbers shocking. Personally I won’t be letting my children spend that much time looking at a screen. Outside of school they have their after-school clubs and hobbies and I will always make sure they have screen-free down time. I know I can’t control their habits but hopefully I can instil in them some healthy habits.

This is such a lovely idea. I definitely remember having favourite TV programmes and movies when I was a child, but so much time was spent just messing about in the park with friends or playing with my own sylvanian families!
