Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam: The Spooky School

Win 1 x 3 new Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam chapter books

Posted on October 21, 2016November 19, 2025 by jenny

I love this time of year. The weather and early evenings bring us indoors more but it also means more time for reading! Luckily my two are little bookworms and love to receive new titles to review. Have you heard of Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam, everyone’s favourite robber-dogs-turned-bakers? They are the stars in a successful picture book series which my 4 year old always picks up at the library. So I was delighted to hear that a new first chapter book for readers aged around 6-9 years has just been published.

Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam: The Spooky School

Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam don’t just make amazing cakes. These two brave bakers solve wacky mysteries too! The new chapter book contains three hilarious read-aloud stories from Tracey Corderoy, with fantastic illustrations by Steven Lenton.

Our favourite book was The Spooky School. Halloween at St. Spectre’s school brings out the cheekiest of ghosts! And who is to blame when the weather goes crazy? A power-grabbing red panda maybe? Certainly not the raccoon gang fixing the museum’s toilets – they’ve got dastardly plans of their OWN!

My children loved the idea of the Halloween treats in the book and wanted to make their own Creepy-Crawly Cupcakes. We didn’t have any popping candy but we had plenty of jelly worms, frogs and spiders which were added to the tops of our cupcakes. They also wanted to make sandwitches, Pumpkin Pasties and Spook-Pops – we’re saving these for another day! This is a lovely story and will be a firm favourite with my two.
